Digital Health Mini-MBA: Reed Smith

Reed Smith is a leader in digital marketing for healthcare having been a Hospital Association Marketing Director, a Platinum Fellow in the Mayo Clinic Social Media Health Network and on the Health committee for the SxSW festival. Through his work he realized that other healthcare marketing professionals wanted an opportunity to get an immerse experience in digital marketing to bring their skill set up to date. As a result, he founded the Social Health Institute and one of their first projects is the Digital Health Mini-MBA Certificate program. Developed in partnership with Clemson University the program launches in May 2015 and applications to attend are being accepted now.

The Yoga Nurse Annette Tersigni

It’s not often you’ll hear the expression “I felt a calling” when someone tells you why they became a medical practitioner. In the case of Annette Tersigni, it happened when she was in a yoga class for health professionals. After participating in a class with stressed out, overworked nurses, she realized she needed to share her knowledge of yoga with them – by becoming a nurse herself. At age 48 she attended nursing school and in 2005 launched The Yoga Nurse program.

What is Yoga Nursing? Yoga Nursing® is a new brand, trend & movement in health care, nursing and yoga created by Annette Tersigni, holistic RN, stress relief, back safety expert and medical yoga therapist. Yoga Nursing unites the ancient wisdom of yoga with the modern science of nursing. Its mission is to train and create a global army of modern nightingales, yoga nurses, who will learn and teach the Yoga Nursing Sacred Remedy— in order to enlighten the ailing health care system and relieve stress, anxiety, pain and suffering for both nurses and their patients.

The Walking Gallery – Personalizing Patient Stories

Regina Holiday faced a medical crisis – her husband Frederick’s cancer diagnosis – and found that the patient’s experience, input or feedback had no place in the healthcare system. After the death of her husband, Regina resolved to speak out about patient advocacy the best way she knew how; with her art. She painted a mural on a gas station in Washington, D.C. illustrating her husband’s health journey titled “73 Cents” (the cost per page of obtaining your medical health records in the state of Maryland). Regina founded  a patient advocacy movement, “The Walking Gallery” for which medical providers and advocates wear “patient story” paintings on the backs of business suits. The Walking Gallery appears at medical conferences, healthcare institutions and health events to draw attention to the need for patient voices to be a part of healthcare processes and systems.
